After the last Sample Sips Grain Showdown I became particularly interested in other 100% grain whiskies that are out there and discovered there’s actually a decent selection although very few are locally available. Thankfully the whisky community is a very sharing one! Continue reading “Sample Sips – Century Reserve 21”
Much like a superhero team each grain in a blended whisky contributes its own unique character to create something else altogether. It can be very helpful to first get to know what each individual grain tastes like so that you know which ones are contributing what flavours to the spirit.

This whisky. I think I’m in love.
This week our random grab from the sample drawer is Collingwood 21 and wow this is smoooooooth.
Today I received an early gift. A sample bottle of John Hall’s Private Cask No. 1. And it was fabulous! But first, a little back story.
My first whisky love was Islay scotch. I had tasted a few Canadian whiskies at my first whisky festival, but aside from Lot 40 none really stuck out in my mind. My only other knowledge of Canadian whisky was the “cheap stuff” and I never cared for it. Then came along Forty Creek. It was just one of those random “what the hell” purchases, but it became so much more, It was love. In my opinion, it’s the best Canadian whisky you can buy having excellent, complex flavours. Each year, John Hall has a special limited release in September at the distillery in Grimsby, Ontario and if you get a chance to go it’s a fun weekend. My favourite part is being able to visit the barrel room, it smells so good in there and it’s the only time visitors are allowed! I’ve bought the past three releases, Evolution (2014), Heart of Gold (2013) and Port Wood Reserve (2012) but one bottle has always eluded me, John Hall’s Private Cask No. 1 (2011). With only 9000 bottles released it’s no longer possible to purchase. It was my unicorn of whiskies, until now! Continue reading “Sample Sips – Private Cask”
Sorry for the hiatus everyone! I’m trying to work a full time job while finishing a never ending Masters thesis. Stupid I know, especially since I should have finished it years ago. I had some serious life stuff happen a little over five and a half years ago. I don’t want to get into that now, that’s a whole other post, but I can say It was extremely depressing and one of the worst things so far for me. Then I was asked if I wanted to do this super incredibly awesome MSc project and I thought that would be just the thing to get me going on with life again! WORST IDEA EVER. Then to top it all of the university decided to treat me horribly by not providing the assistance I needed. People I had no trouble with before now treated me like I was an idiot. Eventually I turned things around and learning to roller skate was a big part of that. Then of course I end up breaking my ankle the night before roller derby try outs. I have awesome timing like that. Writing a thesis while drooling from painkillers does not get you very far. Then once I’m finally hobbling around I get offered a job and by this point I was desperate for money. It’s the worst job ever and takes up so much time but I was finally able to afford what I needed to function as a human being and have been living life and it’s awesome. So now when I even think about my thesis I get overwhelmed with so much anxiety and dread because it just reminds me of the worst time of my life and I just want to move on from that. But the only way to get rid of it is to work on it. It’s a vicious cycle.

Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year so of course I went with the aptly named Bowmore Devil’s Casks for this week’s (and first!) Sample Sips Tuesday. Aside from the obvious candy coated reason for loving Halloween, I love putting together costumes! But what’s a costume loving geek to do the rest of the year? Go to one of the many fan expos of course! I attended my first one this year, the Calgary Expo, and it was just amazing! Seeing cosplayers in real life is great! For those from the whisky world who may not be in the know, cosplay is short for costume play and those wearing the awesome character costumes are cosplayers.

Welcome to Whisky & Comics!
In the past few years I’ve developed an interest in, you guessed it, whisky and comics! Aside from having a dram while catching up on my favourite titles, I never really thought much about bringing those two worlds together. Then one evening, after reading an issue of Rat Queens and perusing the whisky cabinet, I thought “What would each of the Rat Queens drink?”. It was at that moment I realized that there is a serious lack of whisky and comic pairings. Sure, I know what I’d drink with a nice hearty seafood chowder (anything peated, like Bowmore or Laphroaig) and that bourbon is the best with BBQ, but I didn’t know what to pour before sitting down to read my latest comic purchase. Thus the blog came into being.
