From April 7th-10th the Seattle Washington State Convention Center was packed full of cosplayers, geeks, gamers, collectors and more! It was very heart-warming to see all the little Rey cosplayers each day as we made the rounds in Artist Alley. Although no strangers to cons, this was our first time attending Emerald City so we made a whole trip out of it, first visiting Portland before heading to Seattle. Waiting for the Image Expo to begin, the screen on stage read “Comics in your Image”. An interesting statement when you consider the crowd in the room was largely comprised of white males. It’s no secret the comics industry has a diversity issue. The keynote address by Imge publisher Eric Stephenson tactfully commented on the need for diversity, all without ever actually saying the word. He emphasized that “Nothing is impossible” in the realm of comics. It’s a common enough saying told to children, “you can be whatever you want to be”, but it’s not always obvious in our daily reality. Girls used to be told that comics are for boys and people of colour rarely see others like them in media or politics. But “it’s not enough to believe in change, you have to do the hard work”. We opted to participate in 4 Master Class tastings and the main showcase event. Continue reading “NB Spirits Festival 2015”
I’d like to say that I’m writing this surrounded by the spoils acquired at the Edmonton Expo but even after a good nights sleep and a half day of coming down from my convention high I’m still too scared to open my luggage. I don’t need Admiral Ackbar to tell me it’s a trap, because surely everything will spring out at me in cartoon fashion.

I didn’t think the past month could get more exciting but then there was the Calgary Expo!!! It is the second largest comic and entertainment convention in Canada and they do such an amazing job! For those that have never been to a con, if you’re a geek/nerd of anything, you should really try to go to one at least once. Everything from anime, comics, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, gaming and more is represented. Continue reading “Calgary expo and more! Part 2 – The Expo”
It’s been a very busy month for us here at Whisky & Comics! The last weekend of March we attended a fundraiser whisky tasting for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. But not just any tasting! It was a blind tasting where we matched our 6 samples to comic book characters! Continue reading “Calgary Expo and more! Part 1 – The More”
