Canada turns 150 this year! To celebrate, we’ve come up with some truly Canadian cocktails to keep the party going this July 1st.

Classic Caesar

Classic Caesar

Start the morning off right with most world renowned Canadian invented cocktail there is. Created in Calgary in 1969 by Walter Chell, the Caesar is the quintessential brunch drink. If possible, try Alberta’s own Rig Hand Garlic Vodka instead of regular vodka.

  • Celery salt
  • Lime wedge
  • 4-6 oz. Clamato Juice
  • 1½ oz. Vodka
  • 2 dashes Hot sauce
  • 4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1 Crisp celery stalk
  1. Rim highball glass with lime juice and celery salt.
  2. Fill highball glass with ice.
  3. Add Clamato, vodka, hot sauce, Worcestershire and pepper. Stir.
  4. Garnish with celery stalk. Or be creative! The pictured Caesar is garnished with a pepperoni stick and pickled fiddleheads from Scotty’s Hotties.

Montreal Smoked Meat Cocktail

Montreal Smoked Meat Cocktail

Come midday the festivities are just starting to ramp up, but first you’ll need a liquid lunch! This Whisky & Comics original is inspired by the Bullshot cocktail and the best sandwich you can eat from la belle province de Quebec.

  • Yellow mustard
  • Coarse ground pepper
  • 1 oz. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye
  • ½ oz. Dill pickle vodka (we used Saskatchewan’s Lucky Bastard Dill Vodka)
  • 2.5 oz. Canned beef broth
  • 2 dashes Liquid smoke
  • Dill pickle
  1. Rim cocktail glass with mustard and coarse ground pepper. Alternatively try Montreal steak spice seasoning if you can handle the extra salt.
  2. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add rye, dill pickle vodka, beef broth and liquid smoke.
  3. Shake and strain into prepared glass.
  4. Garnish with dill pickle

Nanaimo Flip

Nanaimo Flip

To end the day, Whisky & Comics created this homage to Canada’s favourite dessert, the Nanaimo bar.

  • 1 oz. Semi-sweet chocolate
  • ½ tbsp Butter
  • Coconut flakes
  • Graham cracker crumbs
  • 3 oz. Vanilla rum such as Blue Chair Bay
  • 1 Fresh egg
  • 2 tsp Icing sugar
  • 1 oz. Cream
  1. Melt together chocolate and butter. Let cool slightly. Rim cocktail glass with chocolate. Dip half the rim in graham cracker crumbs and other half in flaked coconut. Place glass in freezer to set.
  2. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add vanilla rum, fresh egg, icing sugar and cream.
  3. Shake and strain into prepared glass.

Cheers to you Canada!
